About the Job

Position Overview

Professional Development Facilitators are a critical and important part of supporting the success of the National Center for Computer Science Education programs. NCCSE professional development (PD) is offered in varying lengths (40 - 100 hours) followed by support throughout the school year. Facilitators work closely with a small group of 10-15 teacher-participants in a professional learning community (PLC). Facilitators provide ongoing support and encouragement throughout the initial professional development and school year. Facilitators should expect to spend on average about 75-125 hours during the initial PD and 35-40 hours during the school year. Professional development may be offered in-person, online, or in hybrid modalities.

This position is based on campus. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager.

  • Help educators participating in professional development workshops learn the curriculum and how to teach it to students.
  • Support the learning needs of other adults, including both content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge.
  • Work closely to support a group of 10-15 teachers in a professional learning community (PLC), including building community and modeling growth mindset strategies.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordination 100%

  • Facilitate PD meetings as determined by modality (online, in-person, hybrid); PD meetings may vary in length (i.e., 90 minutes or several hours)
  • Facilitate online PLC meetings once per month during the school year. Pay will be based on the total hours of the professional development
  • Assist NCCSE team in monitoring and tracking participant progress in throughout the PD and school year
  • Provide ongoing support throughout the school year by hosting required monthly online or in-person meetings and through email communications.
  • Attend scheduled PD facilitator meetings and respond to emails from the project team in a timely fashion
  • Encourage and support PLC members to complete research requirements as applicable
  • Take a leadership role (if necessary) in securing and managing a site for the hybrid PD.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Successfully completed relevant professional development
  • Taught the relevant course or curriculum at least one year
  • Competence with various tools and technologies used in the curriculum
  • Commitment to improving the teaching and learning of novice computer science teachers
  • Desire to learn how to support adult learners
  • Demonstrated strong cross-cultural skills, promoting a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with professional learning communities and adult learners
  • Online only - Experience as an online teacher
  • Familiarity with teaching Advanced Placement computer science courses
