ABOUT THE POSITION

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director (DEI) director is a strategic leadership team member of the University of Minnesota Extension. The director works collaboratively with college leadership, faculty, and staff to understand, foster and bring to life the college vision, strategic goals and integrated objectives for diversity, equity and inclusion. This position will collaboratively lead our college in living out our values where individuals from all racial and ethnic identities, age, nationality, social and economic status, sexual orientation, gender identities/expression, religion, and physical and mental abilities are able to thrive and be engaged.

The DEI Director will report to the dean of Extension and will collaborate on DEI analysis and initiatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Development, Implementation and Coordination of DEI Initiatives - 65%

  • Collaborate with Extension leadership, faculty, educators, and staff to:
    • Assess and understand the college's diversity, equity, and inclusion needs and opportunities.
    • Apply subject matter expertise in equity analysis, employee development, and systemic barrier analysis and mitigation.
    • Direct the implementation of the college's DEI strategy.
    • Lead and facilitate efforts to cultivate a culture of equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
    • Develop and lead college-wide initiatives to strengthen policies and practices that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.
    • Determine metrics to measure and report on DEI work, and develop plans to grow and improve to meet goal metrics.
    • Develop communications and publications highlighting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Work closely with senior leaders, the DEI Advisory Committee, Affinity Groups, Communities of Practice, and department liaisons.
  • Chair Extension's DEI Advisory Committee, including convening regular meetings, and guiding efforts to improve climate and accountability throughout Extension.
  • Provide guidance to units within Extension to advance DEI initiatives.
  • Help build an inclusive environment through relationships within Extension, the University, the LGUs, and the community to understand and leverage existing resources and potential collaborations.

Facilitate DEI Training and Learning Opportunities - 25%

  • Partner with University and Extension leadership, and applicable offices to:
  • Collaborate with Educators and provide advice through a diversity lens on improving the participant learning experience.
  • Partner with Minnesota 1994 LGUs for professional development opportunities

Management - 10%

  • Collaborate with Extension leadership to assess and develop a DEI unit that includes the oversight of budget and operations.
  • Serve on the Extension senior leadership team.
  • Co-lead Civil Rights audit process, data gathering, submission, and training and utilize data to inform components of college training.

APPOINTMENT/SALARY/BENEFITS

  1. This is a 100 %-time, annually renewable academic administrative appointment with job classification of 9341A2.
  2. The desired starting date is summer 2024, with an estimated salary range of $90,000-$115,000, commensurate with education and experience.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant professional experience that demonstrates contributing to and executing DEI programming.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively delivering DEI training.
  • Knowledge of DEI and organizational change models, and the research to understand and implement best DEI practices.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating dialogue with and among employees to cultivate an environment of inclusiveness, collegiality, shared inquiry, shared responsibility, and collective accomplishment that will move DEI work forward.
  • Experience translating data and analytics to develop insights, inform, drive decisions, and measure impact.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution.
  • Firm understanding of US state, federal, and country laws that may impact or regulate diversity, equality, inclusion, and access related practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to travel regularly to the various Extension locations throughout the state of Minnesota, and have overnight stays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in a related DEI field and ten years of relevant DEI experience
  • Experience working in a decentralized organization, building relationships with key stakeholders with the ability to influence and deliver results.
  • Experience partnering at all levels of an organization with a capacity to influence a broad group of stakeholders, partners, and senior leaders without direct authority.
  • Budget management experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Google Suite applications
  • Prior experience partnering with HR on complicated and interwoven employee matters.
  • DEI experience working in higher education, public/governmental organizations, or non-profits.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license and own means of transportation with required liability insurance.
  • When not in the assigned office location, employees must be reachable with a number that will be published in the Extension staff directory.
  • Must have reliable internet if/when working outside of assigned office location.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including occasional evening or weekend work.
  • This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.
