Position Summary

Be the difference and put your passion into action - join Reading Corps! Across the country, only one-third of students read at their grade level, but together, we can change that!

As a Teacher in Training, you'll help students in kindergarten through third grade become better readers while simultaneously pursuing your Master's in Education through the University of Minnesota. Every day, you'll meet with students one-on-one or in pairs to provide extra practice and build skills. With training and on-site coaching, we'll prepare you to help kids succeed and become a great educator. Over the course of two years, you'll also complete 36 credits of coursework, field observations, and student teaching through the University of Minnesota.

We are currently recruiting for the 2024-25 program year with service beginning in August. This is an AmeriCorps member position with Reading Corps, and you'll be joining a team of nearly 2,000 tutors nationwide. Together, we're on a mission to empower kids who through reading! This position is part of a program developed through a formal partnership with Reading Corps and the University of Minnesota. Any information you provide on this application and throughout the interview and selection process will be shared with both organizations.

How You'll Take Action

  • Be a caring adult who's focused on helping students build their skills and confidence.
  • Track student progress and regularly meet with the school's on-site coach.
  • Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data software.
  • Commit to your own growth as a tutor through coaching, training, and professional development.
  • Represent Reading Corps at school events and share your experience with the community to raise awareness.

It Starts with a Passion

Reading Corps takes everyday people and trains them to be great tutors. Anyone can become a tutor as long as they have a passion to make a difference - and meet the following minimum qualifications.

By the time they begin their service, our tutors are:

  • Committed to serve for two full terms.
  • Dependable and have a history of good attendance.
  • Able to understand and follow instructions.
  • Open to making improvements based on feedback.
  • Capable of setting a pace and maintaining a schedule with students.
  • Competent with basic computer skills (like email and navigating online).
  • Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing.
  • 18 years of age or older with bachelor's degree.
  • A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.*
  • Able to successfully complete a .

Program Specific Benefits by hours commitment per week
