About the Job

Assistant Professor, Academic Track (Clinical)/Tenure Track

Duties and Responsibilities:

The University of Minnesota Department of Surgery is seeking an academic Acute Care Surgeon-scientist with dedicated protected research time on the tenure track. The University of Minnesota is currently ranked 8 for publicNIH institutions for federal funding and the DOS is ranked 13th by Blueridge. Clinical responsibilities for the position are negotiable but would include some combination of acute care, critical care and trauma surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical Center and our affiliate and partner sites, includingSouthdale Hospital, Ridges Hospital, and North Memorial Health Hospital. There are opportunities for establishing an elective general surgery practice as well. The applicant would be responsible for approximately 16-18 weeks ofclinical service, inclusive of call responsibilities. Additional duties will include participation in the didactic and clinical education of medical students, residents and fellows; and participation in division, department and institutional administrative activities and committees. The division reimburses on an FTE model, with full compensation for work above and beyond expected hours of service.

This position includes fully protected research time, research staff, and a start-up package. Competitive candidate at the Assistant Professor level should have already obtained K funding (institutional or national) and have a resume competitive for R level federal funding. Competitive candidates at the Associate/Full Professor level should have a history of R level federal funding. Research must focus on Acute Care Surgery and its subspecialties of trauma. Emergency surgery, or surgical critical care. Ideal candidates research areas will overlap with current strengths and existing research programs in surgical informatics, biomedical AI, implementation science, traumatic brain, injury, surgical infections, ECMO and/or prehospital care.

The successful candidate will have strong technical skills in general surgery and critical care with responsibilities to include:

* Participating as the attending staff in one or more of the intensive care units associated with the Division
* Participation as a Surgeon or Intensivist at one of our partner facilities
* Teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows
* Full participation in departmental activities including but not limited to grand rounds, CEU quality meetings, Promotion and Tenure committee meetings, and faculty meetings
* For qualified individuals, up to 20% FTE for research efforts may be available.

Requirements:
* MD degree or equivalent
* Must have or be able to obtain board certification in Surgery and Critical Care
* Must have or be able to obtain a Medical License in the state of Minnesota
* Demonstrated commitment to providing quality and compassionate patient care
* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegiality with staff and partners
* Demonstrated commitment to teaching and research
