Sholom's history dates back nearly 100 years. On June 14,1908, the Jewish Home for the Aged of St. Paul opened at 75 Wilkin Street, thanks to the perseverance and dedication of a group of Jewish women. Today that "Home" is one of nine senior care facilities operated by Sholom Community Alliance. In 1923, the Home moved to 1554 Midway Parkway and changed its name to the Jewish Home for the Aged of the Northwest. In 1971, the Home merged with the George Kaplan Sholom Residence and became known as Sholom Home, Inc. Sholom Home East (the "East" was added when a second nursing home was later built in the western suburbs) underwent several expansions and additions throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s. The Community Housing and Service Corporation (CHSC) was founded in 1971 as the agency of the Minneapolis Jewish community responsible for providing housing with services. CHSC's first venture was Menorah Plaza Apartments, a HUD-supported independent apartment building that opened in 1981 on Minnetonka Boulevard in St. Louis Park. A second low-income apartment building, Menorah West, built on 17 acres of land at Highway 169 and Highway 7 in St. Louis Park, opened in 1987. Menorah West was the first of four buildings that would eventually comprise the Ackerberg Campus. A market-rate senior housing building, Knollwood Place Apartments, followed in 1988, also on the growing "campus." In 1991, with the opening of Sholom Home West, the St. Louis Park site officially became the Ackerberg Campus. In 1995, Sholom Homes, Inc. joined with Community Housing and Service Corporation in an effort to better serve the community and became known as Sholom Community Alliance. Today the non-profit organization is simply known as "Sholom" and offers a broad continuum of residential, health care and social services primarily for the elderly, within a Jewish environment. The Roitenberg Family Assisted Living Residence and Numero-Steinfeldt Foundation Assisted Living Pavilion opened on the Ackerberg Campus in October 2002 — rounding out the "continuum of care" on the campus. In May 2008, the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Apartments was the first to open on the new Rossy and Richard Shaller Family Sholom East Campus in St. Paul. In February, Sholom Home East moved from its home of 86 years on Midway Parkway to the new Shaller Campus and is now known as Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East. The Roitenberg Family Adult Day Center, Bentson Family Assisted Living Residence, Johnson Center and Hospice Care Agency and David Feinberg Vitality & Aquatics Center also opened in February and early March.
