Position description

The University of California, Berkeley, is seeking a Project Processing Archivist to support the archival processing projects in The Bancroft Library. The successful candidate will have experience working with analog and born-digital archival materials; experience working with archival technologies; demonstrated experience appraising and providing original description of archival materials; knowledge of metadata standards; strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills; experience interfacing and coordinating with curators, donors, archivists, and IT staff; and experience working with tools and systems in a special collections environment.

The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of rare materials in the West. Its holdings include more than 690,000 volumes, 175 million manuscript items, 9 million photographs and other pictorial materials, 86,000 microforms, 4.3 million digital files, and 25,000 maps, as well as numerous other categories of unique material. The two largest collections are the Bancroft Collection of Western and Latin Americana and the Rare Books Collection. The archival and rare book materials of the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life are also part of the Bancroft holdings. The Bancroft is home to three research groups: the Oral History Center (formerly the Regional Oral History Office), the Mark Twain Papers, and the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri. The Bancroft Library is an active center of teaching and research. Supporting the programs of about 30 campus departments annually, it mounts a regular series of public exhibitions, roundtable lectures, and open houses. Responsibilities
The Project Processing Archivist will be responsible for supporting high priority archival processing projects, such as women in politics and western jewish history, of the University of California within the Technical Services Division of The Bancroft Library. Responsibilities include:

* Archival processing, preserving, and supporting access to analog, born-digital and hybrid archival collections
* Implementing and applying tools used in the special collections and archival communities (e.g., ArchivesSpace, Alma/Primo, Digital Asset Management Systems, FTK, ePADD, BitCurator)
* Coordinating closely with Bancroft curators and the Head of Archival Processing.
* The Project Processing Archivist will report to the Head of Archival Processing and oversee the work of student library employees as needed. The Project Processing Archivist will work in consultation with Bancroft curators, public services staff, acquisitions staff, other archivists, and Library IT staff, as well as donors and researchers.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

* Advanced degree

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

* One year of experience working with archival materials
* One year of experience processing archival materials

Preferred qualifications

* Master's degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution program or equivalent international degree
* One year of experience working with archival tools and technologies
* Two years of experience in processing, preserving, and providing access to analog, born-digital, and hybrid archival collections
* Knowledge of archival content, structure, and preservation metadata standards, including MARC, EAD, DACS, MODS, and PREMIS
* Knowledge of ArchivesSpace, Alma/Primo, Digital Asset Management Systems, FTK, ePADD, and/or BitCurator
* Demonstrated analytical, documentation, and communication skills
