Job Description
Overview Looking for a place where "Doing the Most Good" is a mission? The Salvation Army has an Entry Level Counselor 1 position in Minneapolis, Minnesota available for the ideal candidate. This part-time with potential for full-time position assists individuals with various disaffilations including but not limited various addictions (alcohol, drugs, gambline, chronic homelessness, etc.). They complete counseling and spiritual interviews with beneficiaries, conduct counseling sessions, teach program related classes, develop and track the progress of rehabilitation plans, track progress of work therapy, and maintain relevant and real-time case notes as required. The Counselor must demonstrate a comfort level in prayer and spiritual counseling that will guide beneficiaries in the spiritual component of our program. Counseling must be intentionally "goal based" and must consist of spiritual support which will help individuals develop and track recovery, spiritual, and personal goals. Responsibilities Essential functions and responsibilities: * Conduct in-depth interviews with newly admitted beneficiaries (counseling and spiritual assessments, self-sufficiency matrix short form, and full intakes). Assess spiritual needs of beneficiaries and refer to Chaplain or Administration as needed. * Assist beneficiaries to understand and overcome social and emotional problems, through individual/group spiritual counseling, which may include conducting classes and group sessions. * Design and manage individual rehabilitation plans for beneficiaries. Utilize the program offered by the ARC, and when necessary, ancillary services from other community agencies. * Monitor beneficiaries to evaluate effectiveness of rehabilitation program and adapt rehabilitation goals and plans as needed. * Maintenance and security of active online beneficiary files. Secure appropriate background information from other agencies and institutions. Complete case notes and add appropriate services to each beneficiary file in a timely manner. * Prepare formal work therapy evaluations and work adjustment reports at intervals utilizing established policies and procedures. * Plan and participate in intra-agency conferences on individual beneficiaries as needed, as well as participating in In-Service training and local seminars/workshops to enhance counseling skills. * Must be available for a flexible schedule; to work early shifts, late shifts, and some weekends, in order to provide counseling as needed. * Other duties as assigned. Qualifications The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position. Education & Experience: Minimum of two years related experience and/or training in addiction, recovery, and/or spiritual counseling. State or National certification as an Addiction Counselor is strongly preferred. Certifications: Valid Driver's License and ability to drive in accordance with the Salvation Army policy. Skills/Abilities: Ability to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with beneficiaries, management and staff. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common professional journals, reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from beneficiaries, agencies, or the community. Effectively present information to administration, beneficiaries, and public groups. Basic computer skills including but not limited to MS Office, data management, and all other programs or systems that are adopted by the TSA ARC. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
