Job/Internship Description

Carpenter's Latrobe Specialty Metals operations, based in Latrobe, Pa., manufacture high-performance specialty alloys serving aerospace, energy and other demanding markets. Carpenter acquired Latrobe in 2012 to increase capacity to meet strong customer demand and to broaden the company's product mix. Latrobe employs more than 1,000 dedicated production, maintenance and salaried staff and continues a century-long legacy of leadership in metals technology. Latrobe is part of the corporation's Specialty Alloys Operations division.

PROCESS METALLURGIST INTERN

PRIMARY DUTIES

The Process Metallurgist Intern will complete a project focused on EAP yield improvement through optimization of oxygen use during dephosphorization cycle.

  • Record the oxygen consumption during the EAF dephosphorization cycle
  • Correlate this consumption with molten bath chemistry
  • Study the relationship between chemistry and the cubic feet of oxygen required to successfully dephosphorize the heat
  • Interface with floor attendants, supervisors, and metallurgists as needed; give help and advice; and provide feedback on project updates and status
  • Perform basic statistical analyses as required

REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualified students must be currently enrolled in a college degree program and have a minimum GPA of 2.75 to be considered
  • Majors in Materials Science & Engineering (MS&E) or Metallurgy and has completed at least one full year of academic study in the field
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Desire to work in a manufacturing environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong inter-personal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Self-driven in order to achieve results
  • Offers are contingent upon the successful completion of Carpenter's pre-employment selection process, which includes a drug and alcohol screen
