Position Description

Do you like working with technology that pushes the limits of what a whole industry can do? There's a reason Seagate is the largest supplier of storage solutions in the world. Our technology and products are second to none.

We have a great opportunity at Seagate in the Transducer Design group.

Will work as part of a small, advanced development team to design industry-leading magnetic recording heads for disk drives. Will have the exciting opportunity to help push the areal density of Seagate recording heads beyond that of any other competitor in the world. If you thrive working with others to creatively solve daunting (some would even say unsolvable) problems, this may be the job for you.

This work will consist of identifying - often inventing - the concepts that will improve reader and writer performance. As with any creative process, it is nearly impossible to script the methods for invention but new concepts are typically formed under the influence of internal modeling, external literature, previous experimentation, and incessant brainstorming with colleagues. Once transducer improvement concepts are identified, you will work with wafer process engineers to build recording heads that embody the concept. Additionally, will be responsible for prescribing the electrical tests to be performed on the experimental recording heads. Finally, will analyze the test data, draw conclusions from them, and communicate the knowledge to coworkers.

Will conceive and develop solutions to engineering programs through the application of professionally accepted engineering techniques, practices and procedures. Will exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Having broad expertise or unique knowledge, will use skills to contribute to development of company objectives and principles and to achieve goals in creative and effective ways.

Expertise in the magnetism of small (~ 50 nm scale) devices is required. Candidates should have at least 5 - 10 years applicable industry / academic experience. Having an insatiable curiosity for understanding the details of recording and how to improve them is highly valued. The ability to work well with a team while struggling to solve world-class problems is a must.

Teamwork is a core competency at Seagate so individual must be able to work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of engineers and technicians.
