POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Transportation Engineer acts as a team leader or project manager with complete responsibility for design and/or coordination, certification, management and client relations for transportation engineering projects. Performs calculations using engineering formulas and skills. Provides expert judgment and analysis for the design, development and implementation of engineering services. Responsible for productivity of subordinates and ensures projects are on time and on budget. Supervises less experienced engineers and/or technical support, and develops a solid team. Accomplishes tasks within assigned market.

The Lead Transportation Engineer will have a primary career direction either in traffic engineering, transportation planning of both fields of expertise. The position applicant will be expected to work within both fields of expertise and develop competencies in traffic software including HCS and Synchro/SimTraffic. The position also requires the ability to prepare proposals, interview with clients for projects and actively participate in public presentations.

• Assists in the preparation of design calculations.
• Practices efficiency engineering as it pertains to design selection.
• Recommends alterations to development and design to improve quality.
• Works closely with engineering technicians and experienced engineers.
• May work in the office or in the field.
• Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
• Is technically involved with the resolution of design problems that may include performing field investigations or observations.
• Performs detailed design work.
• Checks design computations done by others.
• Coordinates specific design aspects of a project.
• Performs engineering design and evaluations within specialty.
• May devise new approaches and solutions to problems encountered.
• Prepares reports and correspondence concerning the direction of assigned projects.
• Participates in marketing, sales and business development activities within assigned market.
• Demonstrates a wide degree of creativity and latitude.
• Resolves highly complex technical issues and conducts advanced research.
• Participates in contract bidding and administration, observes project action on site.
• May participate or lead team development/recruiting activities.
• Provides excellent client service.
• Communicates with clients to ensure we are meeting their needs.
• Participates in community and professional development activities.
• Works closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.


EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required.
• PE registration required.
• PTOE certification is preferred.
• ITS Planning and Design experience is preferred.
• 6 + years of engineering experience is required.
• Experience preparing DOT studies, corridor studies and environmental documents required
• Experience in traffic analysis or the willingness to grow in the area of traffic engineering is required.
• Proven experience in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, Access), AutoCAD preferred, additional software knowledge depending on specialty.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS
• Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Requires the ability to travel.
• Requires a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.
• Requires prolonged sitting with occasional walking, standing, bending, stooping and stretching.
