Position Summary – Traffic Specialist

Responsible for independently coordinating activities related to the traffic process and the strategic movement of material outbound from Olympic Steel to its customers and processors within a 48 state geography. Ensures that schedules for all trucking requirements needed to fulfill internal and external customer requirements and provide on-time delivery are followed. Completes traffic reports. Responsible for implementing the dispatch schedule and coordination of common carriers for delivery of material to customer locations. May provide support and coaching for less experienced employees. Provides effective customer service information to both internal and external customers. Assumes ownership of issue resolution on more complex issues and offers assistance and guidance to less experienced staff. Proactively involves Sales, Warehouse staff and Management as well as traffic department co-workers as needed to ensure good communication and awareness as necessary.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manage freight lines to insure on-time delivery of freight to our customers and vendors.
  • Interaction Duties (with customers, Management, etc.)
  • Prepares truck line up and releases based on information from inventory reports, communication with production planning and interaction with sales personnel.
  • Interacts with truck drivers (i.e., Give directions, checks in drivers, instructs them as where to load/unload, fills out proper paper work, obtains proper signatures and copies, keeps track of loading times and keeps abreast of any problem areas in the plant).
  • Assists in ensuring dispatch schedule for trucks is on-time.
  • Participates in production meetings, utilizes computer reports to notify Production and Sales of orders coming due and past due.
  • Monitors and tracks delivery and on-time production performance daily.
  • Maintains and distributes sales orders, reports, documentation and files as they relate to the job function.

    Skills/Competencies/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
  • 4+ years experience in transportation or related field preferred; customer service experience a plus
  • 3+ years experience in truck dispatch preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications
  • Knowledge of transportation industry and Carrier capabilities
  • High level of creativity and problem solving skills; strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, multi-tasking skills, and strong decision-making capabilities required
  • Proven teamwork skills, with the ability to work independently
  • Strong personal value proposition and high degree of professionalism required
