Position Description

To provide psychiatric services to out-patients of the Mental Health/Chemical Dependency Services Division in the Mental Health Clinic, crisis program, or other facility deemed appropriate; to provide psychiatric consultation to other clinic staff, case managers, public health nurses, and other persons involved in the care of the client; to provide clinical supervision, consultation, and collaboration with Physician Assistants and Nursing staff; and to perform other duties as assigned.

Examples of Work Performed:
* Provides psychiatric diagnostic assessments, evaluates need for medications and prescribes as indicated; makes urgent assessments of persons in crisis, evaluating for need of treatment including referrals for in-patient treatment when necessary; assesses patient's competence and makes such determinations when appropriate.

* Provides diagnostic assessments and evaluations to other agencies as indicated such as the Social Security Administration, State Department of Human Services, various court systems, and other legal and protective systems.

* Provides information with others involved in treatment planning such as case managers, public health nurses, and Rule 36 staff.

* Consults with other treatment staff to determine need and appropriateness of psychotropic medication and psychiatric assessments.

* Provides assessments and consultation for non-crisis patients receiving psychotherapy.

* Provides clinical supervision to Physician Assistants and Nurses, maintaining compliance with statutory requirements and other regulations regarding clinical services.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Doctorate degree in medicine (M.D.) and completion of a psychiatric residency program.

Experience: None.

Other: License as a Medical Doctor by the Minnesota State Board of Medical Examiners. Eligibility for Board certification in Psychiatry. Must maintain all continuing medical education requirements as mandated.
