General Purpose of Job: To inspire and prepare all students with the confidence, courage and competence to achieve their dreams; contribute to community; and engage in a lifetime of learning. Assist the teacher in providing aquatic-related learning experiences for students and assist the teacher in the supervision of students in the pool and locker room areas. Responsibilities:
- Carry out instructional activities wth students as planned and directed by the teacher.
- Be familiar with the District 279 aquatic curriculum and assist the teacher with writing aquatic lesson plans.
- Asses students' skill performance and provide feedback to the teacher on student progress and behavior.
- Maintain a healthy and safe environment for learners and staff, conduct a daily pool area safety check and report areas where attention is needed.
- Lifeguard stucents in the pool during aquatic activities and supervise adapted students.
- Assit the teacher in implementing the behavior management program in the pool and locker room areas; enforce expectations of students; refer issues of discipline and behavior problems to the teacher.
- Prepare pool equipment and supplies for daily instruction (e.g., swim caps, clipboards, swimsuits, etc.).
- Conduct a pool equipment inventory at the beginning and end of each school year; note the daily condition of pool equipment and refer new or replacement equipment requests to the physical education department chairperson and equipment repair requests to custodial personnel as needed throughout the school year.
- Store all pool equipment properly at the end of each school day.
- Perform clerical duties assigned by the teacher (e.g., recordkeeping activities such as class attendance and swim course record sheets, assign pool lockers to students, etc).
- Attend physical education department meetings as required.
- Conduct a physical education department equipment inventory as directed by the physical education department chairperson.
- Attend all aquatic and safety training sessions required by the District.
- Practice legal and ethical standards of conduct established by the District.
Qualifications:
1). High school diploma or equivalent.
2). Current Water Safety Instructor certificate.
3). Current Advanced Lifesaving Certificate. (After December 1990, must upgrade to current
lifeguard training certificate.
4). Current CPR certificate.
5). Verifiable first aid training.
- SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES:
1). Ability to teach American Red Cross swimming and water safety skills.
2). Ability to supervise/lifeguard students in the pool during aquatic activities.
3). Demonstrate record keeping ability.
4). Human Relations: Serving, helping and exchanging information in courteous manner.
- EXPERIENCE: Previous experience working with elementary and secondary students in pool activities.
