About the Job

The University of Minnesota Crookston, one of five campuses comprising the University of Minnesota system, invites applications for a full-time Horticulture teaching faculty position. The successful applicant will also guide future Horticulture program development exploring the societal emphasis on local foods, urban agriculture, and increasing demand for other horticultural crops. This position is for individuals with a master's degree and/or a terminal degree with a strong commitment to teaching and service.

Position

Full-time, nine-month, annual-renewable lecturer position in Horticulture (Class # 9754) in the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department at the Crookston campus of the University of Minnesota starting August 14, 2024. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and a competitive fringe benefits package is offered. Lecturers are eligible for professional development support. Full-time lecturer appointments carry a <30.0 credit teaching load distributed over the fall and spring semesters (typically 4-5 courses per semester). Full-time lecturer appointments are not expected to establish a research agenda. Final job offer is contingent upon complete background check and receipt of official transcripts.

Responsibilities

Deliver high-quality undergraduate instruction to students in the Horticulture (B.S) program. Current course assignments may include Introduction to Horticulture, Woody Plant Materials, Commercial Floriculture Crops, Plant Propagation, Herbaceous Perennials, Indoor Flowering and Foliage Plants, Floral Design, and other courses depending on interest and need. This position requires a commitment to an experiential learning educational philosophy within the land grant mission of the university.

The successful candidate is expected to provide undergraduate academic and career advising, advise program-related extracurricular clubs and actively participate in recruitment, assessment, and retention efforts. They will also lead assessment and further development of the program (e.g. exploring the societal emphasis on local foods, urban agriculture, fruit and vegetable production and increasing demand for other horticultural crops), and foster equity and a sense of belonging among all students.

The responsibilities also include developing and maintaining a strong industry support network, career guidance and placement for students, and working knowledge of safe greenhouse and facility operations. The position requires regular office hours and engagement in service activities on the University of Minnesota Crookston campus.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Horticulture or closely-related discipline;
  • Commitment to or record of effective teaching, preferably at the undergraduate on-campus level;Demonstrated field/industry experience in the horticulture field
  • Experience/knowledge of landscape plants and horticulture crops of the upper midwestern U.S.
  • Effective communication skills;
  • Ability to read, write and understand English;
  • Final job offer contingent upon receipt of official transcripts, complete background check, and authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Horticulture with relevant professional experience;
  • Horticulture teaching experience at the college level;
  • Research experience in an academic institution;
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and scholarly publication;
  • Experience with externally funded projects and grants.
