Company Overview

In an era when consolidations and mergers of banks are the rule, BankCherokee continues its long tradition as an independent, family-owned bank. This cherished tradition ensures that BankCherokee is able to respond to the unique needs of the communities it serves with a high level of service and personal attention.

BankCherokee was chartered as Merriam Park State Bank in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1908. In 1920 the bank was moved to the west side of Saint Paul and given the name Cherokee State Bank. The name comes from the bank’s location, Cherokee Heights, a bluff area that overlooks the Mississippi River and downtown Saint Paul.

The late Russell Gesell joined the bank in 1924, became President in 1936 and subsequently purchased majority ownership of the bank. He served as President until his death in 1966. Jim Gesell, Russell’s son, has been with BankCherokee since 1963 and is now Chairman of the Board. A third generation of the Gesell family now operates BankCherokee. Heidi Gesell is President and CEO, and Andy Gesell serves as Vice President for Business Banking.

BankCherokee has grown to six locations in the Saint Paul area and over $245 million in assets.
