Company OverviewWhat is a watershed?A watershed is the area of land that collects and transports rainfall and snowmelt to a given lake, stream, or wetland. Watersheds can be a few square miles in size, as in the case of a small lake, or continental in size, as in the case of the Mississippi River. What is a watershed district? A watershed district is a special purpose unit of local government. Its area is based on watershed boundaries and its purpose is to manage water resources. By managing water resources on a watershed basis, communities can better work together to prevent and correct such problems as flooding, polluted lakes, and eroding stream banks. The Minnesota Watershed Act of 1955 allows for the establishment of watershed districts (MN Statues 103D.205) and gives them authority to (MN Statutes 103D.335): * Create and enforce rules to regulate, conserve, and control the use of water resources * Hire staff, and enter into contracts to carry out water management projects * Levy taxes, accept gifts, and borrow funds to finance district operations * Acquire property needed to carry out projects * Acquire, construct, and operate drainage systems, dams, and water supply systems What is the Capitol Region Watershed District? Established in 1998, the Capitol Region Watershed District covers 40 square miles and includes portions of Falcon Heights, Lauderdale, Maplewood, Roseville, and St. Paul. The District is located within Ramsey County and has a population of 245,000 people. The Mississippi River is the predominant water resource to which the entire district drains. Como Lake, Crosby Lake, Loeb Lake, and Lake McCarrons are also located within the District. |
